Islamabad: Pakistan’s ruling coalition and former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf Pakistan (PTI) party have agreed to hold general elections on the same day across the country, but the two parties could not agree on the date of polling. Actually, Imran’s PTI was demanding early elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The provincial assemblies of both were dissolved in January this year. At the same time, the Government of Pakistan was adamant on holding federal and provincial elections across the country on the same date in October. The third meeting between the ruling coalition and the PTI took place on Tuesday night to discuss the proposal to hold elections in the country on the same date.

There is no confusion now about whether elections should be held in one or two provinces on different dates or not, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar was quoted as saying by the news. Both the sides have agreed that it is beneficial to hold elections in the country on a single day. According to Dar, another positive outcome of the talks was the decision to hold the elections under the caretaker system. However, he said that the date of the election has not yet been agreed upon. Dar said, “We have fixed the date… but consensus is yet to be reached on it.” He told that both the parties will discuss with their respective leadership regarding the date of election. Dar termed the consensus reached on the proposal to hold elections on a single day across Pakistan as a “major progress”.

He said both sides have shown resilience and if they continue to work towards a solution with sincerity, “the third phase (finalizing the election date) will also be successful”. Meanwhile, Yousuf Raza Gilani of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) said that both sides have also agreed to accept the election results. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)’s Ishaq Dar, Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Azam Nazir Tarar and Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, besides PPP’s Yousuf Raza Gilani and Syed Naveed Qamar and representatives of other parties attended the meeting. .

On the other hand, from the main opposition party PTI Vice President Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhary and Senator Ali Zafar attended the meeting. After the meeting, Qureshi told the media that his party had accepted the government’s proposal to hold the elections on a single day under a caretaker arrangement. However, he added that the dates for the dissolution of the National Assembly and the Provincial Assemblies of Sindh and Baluchistan as well as the date of elections are yet to be agreed upon. According to Qureshi, the PTI has proposed that these assemblies be dissolved on or before May 14, before simultaneous elections are held across the country.
