Senior Hamas leader and political chief of the terrorist group Ismail Haniyeh has reportedly sought Pakistan’s help in the ongoing war with Israel. Describing Pakistan as “brave”, he said that if Israel “faces resistance from Pakistan, the crime of cruelty may stop”, Pakistan’s Geo News reported on Wednesday. Haniyeh made this comment during his address at the national dialogue on the topic ‘Sacredness of Al-Aqsa Mosque and Responsibility of the Muslim Ummah’ held in Islamabad, Pakistan. Expressing hope for Pakistan’s support for Hamas, Haniyeh called the country “the land of the mujahideen (people fighting for Islam)”.

Underscoring the sacrifices made by Palestinians in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, Haniyeh said Pakistan’s strength could potentially stop the conflict, Geo News reported.

The top Hamas leader stressed the importance of opposing Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip among countries that closely follow the Holy Quran. He said Israel’s actions, including the arrest of approximately 16,000 Palestinians and the desecration of holy sites, were a violation of international norms.

Ismail Haniyeh also expressed disappointment over the non-implementation of the Oslo Accords, citing the increase in Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories. The top leader of Hamas warned against diplomatic ties between Islamic countries and Israel, saying it would seriously ruin the Palestinian cause.

In his address at the event organized by Majlis Ittehad-e-Ummah Pakistan, Haniyeh accused the US and other countries of supporting Israel and spoke about his desire to see the Jewish state withdraw. Furthermore, he claimed that Israel had planned a surprise attack on Gaza with the intention of “permanent destruction”.

He also justified Hamas’ October 7 attack, calling it self-defense and saying it stopped Israel’s annexation plans, Geo News reported.

During his speech, Ismail Haniyeh said that Palestinians have “high expectations” from Pakistan and expressed confidence in the country’s strength. He said Hamas was countering Israel’s most advanced weapons, and expressed determination about the Palestinian terrorist group’s success in derailing Israel’s intentions. In his speech, he also called Jews the “biggest enemy” of all Muslims around the world, Geo News reported.

Ismail Haniyeh was born in a refugee camp and now lives in Qatar.

Haniyeh has been the tough-talking face of Hamas since the war began. Born in Gaza’s al-Shati refugee camp in 1962, his parents fled their home during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. Hamas leaders are now based in Qatar.

Hanieh, who has been associated with Hamas since his college days, was appointed head of the terrorist group in 1997. Since then, he has risen in the ranks and was also the head of the group that won the Palestinian legislative elections in 2006 and became Prime Minister. Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed Ismail Haniyeh at the height of the Fatah–Hamas conflict in June 2007, but the Hamas leader did not accept the order and continued to exercise the post of prime minister in Gaza, despite both Became one.

Following the brutal October 7 attack, footage surfaced online showing Haniyeh celebrating and celebrating the massacre with other Hamas officials. Haniyeh’s home in Gaza was destroyed by Israeli warplanes last month.

Israel-Hamas war

His comments came when the Israel-Hamas war completed two months on Thursday. Israel has launched an all-out offensive into Gaza in response to Hamas’ October 7 attack, which left more than 1,000 Israelis dead. The terrorist group also took more than 200 hostages with them to the Gaza Strip, more than 80 of whom – including foreign nationals – were released during a recent seven-day ceasefire with Israel.

Israel’s continued bombardment of Gaza has killed more than 16,000 Palestinians and displaced thousands more. The United Nations has consistently called for a ceasefire in the besieged territory, with its Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noting in a letter to the President of the Security Council that public order in Gaza “will soon collapse completely due to the desperate circumstances”.

Furthermore, many global leaders have called for a Gaza ceasefire despite their support of Israel’s right to defend itself. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected ceasefire talks, saying it would mean capitulating to Hamas. He has also vowed to destroy the terrorist group and has ordered the killing of Hamas leaders around the world.
