United Nations (Uttam Hindu News): UNESCO has declared the dance Garba of Gujarat as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” (ICHH), recognizing it as a “living expression” of heritage that promotes inclusivity and reflects the feminine energy of ‘Shakti’. UNESCO stated that “intangible cultural heritage is an important factor in maintaining cultural diversity in the face of increasing globalization” and that its understanding on the part of different communities helps intercultural dialogue and mutual respect for other ways of life. “For decades, Garba has been an integral, multigenerational component of Gujarati culture in India and among the Indian diaspora around the world,” it said. UNESCO said that Garba is performed during the nine days of Navratri festival which is dedicated to the worship of feminine energy or Shakti.
“The visual expression of this feminine energy is expressed through the Garba dance,” it said. UNESCO said, “Apart from being a religious ritual, Garba promotes social equality by weakening socio-economic, gender and rigid sectarian structures. “It remains inclusive and participatory by diverse and marginalized communities, thereby strengthening community bonds.”
Tim Curtice, Director of UNESCO’s regional office in New Delhi, said, “I hope this will help ensure the viability of this tradition and empower the community, especially youth, to continue the knowledge, skills and oral traditions associated with Garba.” Will inspire for.”
Garba joins India’s 12 celebrations of Navroz, along with the ICHH list, which is shared with other countries. India’s list includes Vedic chanting tradition, Chhau dance, Mudiyettu dance drama of Kerala, Ramlila performance, Buddhist chanting of Ladakh and Durga Puja. The committee also recognized rickshaws and rickshaw painting in Dhaka on Wednesday.
