Pakistan’s National Assembly will be dissolved on August 9: Shehbaz Sharif

Islamabad. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that the National Assembly will be dissolved on August 9, three days before the term of the lower house ends. With this move, general elections will have to be held in the country within 90 days. Sharif said this at a dinner hosted for the ruling coalition partners at the Prime Minister’s residence on Thursday, Dawn newspaper reported in a news report on Friday. The five-year term of the Parliament of Pakistan is going to be completed on 12 August. In such a situation, the ruling coalition government is preparing for the elections.

Under the provision of the constitution, general elections have to be held within 60 days after the completion of the term of the National Assembly, but if the assembly is dissolved before the completion of the term, this period can be extended up to 90 days. The Prime Minister will send a notification to President Arif Alvi to dissolve the National Assembly on August 9, the Express Tribune newspaper reported. According to the constitution, the assembly will be dissolved as soon as the President signs the notification. The report states that if the President does not sign for any reason, the Assembly will automatically dissolve 48 hours after the Prime Minister’s notification is received.

At a dinner ceremony, Sharif told leaders of allies that the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has finalized discussions within the party and the prime minister will hold a final round of talks with allies on the working structure on Friday.
