Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has banned the use of ‘red carpet’ at government events in an effort to reduce wasteful expenditure due to the economic crisis in the country and it can be used only in receptions for diplomats. Sharif expressed displeasure over the use of ‘red carpet’ during visits of ministers and senior officials to government functions. According to the Cabinet Affairs Division, the use of ‘red carpet’ has been banned on the instructions of the Prime Minister.
According to the division’s notification, the Prime Minister has directed that ‘red carpet’ will not be used for ministers and officials at government events in future. However, according to the news of ‘The Express Tribune’ newspaper, it can be used only as a protocol for foreign diplomats. Last week, Prime Minister Sharif and cabinet members had decided not to voluntarily take salaries and allowances in an effort to reduce wasteful expenditure.

Earlier, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari had decided not to take salary and allowances due to the economic challenges facing the country.
