New Delhi: Patanjali Ayurveda and its Managing Director Acharya Balkrishna, facing contempt of court notice for issuing ‘misleading’ advertisements, have approached the Supreme Court seeking unconditional apology. Indian Medical Association had filed a petition against Baba Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved for defaming allopathy medicine.

In this case, the apex court had reprimanded him on March 19 and ordered Ramdev and Balkrishna to appear before the court on April 2. Before that, by filing an affidavit before the apex court, Balakrishna has said that he has the highest respect for the rule of law and is bound to follow it. He expressed regret that the advertisement, which contained only general statements,

Objectionable sentences were also inadvertently included in it. This happened because, “The company’s media department personnel were not aware of the court order.” Balkrishna, a disciple of yoga guru Baba Ramdev, said in a statement given by Patanjali Ayurveda on 21 November 2023. He apologized unconditionally for the violation and said that he would ensure that such advertisements are not issued in future.

However, he said Schedule J of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act 1954, read with the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1955, is in an outdated state and the last changes were introduced in 1996. The Drug and Cosmetic Act, 1940, was passed when there was a lack of scientific evidence in Ayurveda research, the affidavit said.
