PM Modi met NRIs in Qatar, expressed gratitude

Doha (Uttam Hindu News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Doha after concluding his two-day visit to the United Arab Emirates, met the Indian expatriate in Qatar and said he was “grateful” to the community. He reached here late on Wednesday night. After June 2016, this is Modi’s second visit to Qatar, where about 8 lakh 40 thousand Indians live.
The Prime Minister posted on Instagram along with pictures of him being welcomed by members of the Indian community, “Extraordinary welcome in Doha! Grateful to the Indian diaspora.” He had earlier said in a statement that the presence of the strong Indian community in Doha is “a testament to the strong ties between our people”.
Upon his arrival, he was welcomed by Sultan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and met with his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. The two leaders discussed ways to promote friendship between the two countries. Modi wrote on Twitter, “Had a wonderful meeting with PM MBA_Althani. Our discussions revolved around ways to promote India-Qatar friendship.”
The External Affairs Ministry said the PM held “a fruitful meeting” with the Qatari PM, in which discussions were held to enhance bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, energy and finance. On Thursday, PM Modi will meet Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and hold talks on bilateral as well as regional and global issues.
Bilateral trade between India and Qatar currently stands at around $20 billion, and Qatar is also a significant investor in various economies in India.
The visit is timely, as it comes just after the release of eight former Indian Navy personnel who were sentenced to death by Qatar last year on espionage charges. They were employees of Doha-based company Dahra Global and were detained in August 2022.
