Johannesburg. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday attended the ‘BRICS Leaders’ Retreat’ in South Africa. During this, he discussed global developments with other leaders of the Group of Five countries. Modi arrived in Johannesburg on Tuesday on a four-day visit to South Africa and Greece. In Johannesburg, he will attend the 15th BRICS Leaders’ Summit to be held from August 22 to 24 at the invitation of South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa. This will be the first face-to-face summit of BRICS leaders after 2019. BRICS countries include Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi wrote on the social media platform ‘X’, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached the Summer Palace to participate in the ‘BRICS Leaders’ Retreat’. He was warmly welcomed by the host, President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa. “The Prime Minister along with other BRICS leaders will discuss international developments and leverage the BRICS platform to find solutions to global challenges,” Bagchi said. Earlier, the Prime Minister addressed the ‘BRICS Business Forum Leaders’ Dialogue’ in Johannesburg.

Before attending the event, he saw a model of the Swaminarayan temple under construction in the city. Modi said, “The BRICS Business Forum gave me an opportunity to highlight India’s development path and the steps taken to promote ease of doing business and availability of public services. It also gave an opportunity to highlight the progress made by India in digital payments, infrastructure building, startup world and other areas. , believes in ‘Make for the World’. Meanwhile, media reports from Johannesburg said Chinese President Xi Jinping skipped Tuesday’s BRICS Business Forum in South Africa where he was expected to deliver a speech along with other leaders of the grouping. China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao read Xi Jinping’s speech at the event, in which he criticized the US for its ‘hegemonic’ tendency. In the speech, Xi said the US has a tendency to fight countries that threaten its dominance in global affairs and financial markets. He said that every country has the right to develop and people should have the freedom to lead a happy life. But the Chinese president said in a veiled attack on the US that the country is “eager to maintain hegemony” and is willing to go to any extent to cripple emerging markets and developing countries.
