Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen is on a trip to the United States that aims to show that many nations are friends with her self-ruled island amid growing threats from China. Taiwan is being careful about where Tsai will stay during the trip and she will not, as usual, hold official meetings with any senior US leader in Washington. In fact, China has said that if this is done, it will give a strong response. Sai reached New York on Wednesday.
Only some details of his visit have been made public. Xu Shuian, a senior Chinese diplomat in Washington, hinted at an expected meeting between Tsai and Kevin McCarthy somewhere in the country. He told reporters in a digital session on Wednesday that the meeting would have serious consequences overall and would have a “severe” impact on US-China relations.
US Senator Robert Menendez said that an American official meeting Tsai informally signals that America’s support for Taiwan is “strong and clear”. “Taiwan will resolutely defend the values of freedom and democracy,” Tsai told reporters before boarding a plane to the US.
“External pressure will not deter our resolve to engage with the world,” he said. Diplomatic pressure on Taiwan has increased recently. Honduras has established diplomatic relations with China after breaking ties with Taiwan. Taiwan is now recognized by only 13 sovereign countries, including Vatican City.
