Hundreds of protesters gathered at the main complex of New York City’s famous ‘Grand Central Terminal’ on Friday evening, chanting slogans demanding a ceasefire, as Israel’s bombardment on the Gaza Strip intensified. New York Police Department (NYPD) officers detained at least 200 of these protesters and escorted them out of the train station. The NYPD said the protesters were briefly detained, issued summonses and then released. She said the exact number of people detained would be announced on Saturday morning. During the demonstration, the ‘Metropolitan Transportation Authority’ asked passengers to use Penn Station as an alternative.
After the police removed the protesters from the station, the remaining protesters came out onto the streets. Pro-Jewish groups held a similar protest in Washington last week, during which more than 300 people were arrested for illegally demonstrating. Israel has closed the Internet and other means of communication in the Gaza Strip, due to which the 23 lakh people living there have been cut off from each other and the outside world. Israel has also intensified air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip since Friday night.
Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said more than 7,300 people had been killed in the attacks, more than 60 percent of whom were minors and women. According to the Israeli government, more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, were killed in Israel during the initial attack by Hamas. Hamas has taken at least 229 people hostage in Gaza. The UN General Assembly has approved a non-binding resolution calling for a “humanitarian ceasefire” in Gaza.
