Tension increased due to rallies of rival political parties in Dhaka, paramilitary force deployed

Paramilitary forces were deployed in Bangladesh on Saturday to ensure security amid protests by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the ruling Awami League. BNP workers protesting demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina clashed with the police. At the same time, Awami League workers had taken out a peace rally. BNP led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia took out a massive rally here demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister. He says that to conduct free and fair elections, the resignation of the Prime Minister and the formation of a non-party interim government is necessary.
According to eyewitnesses and private TV channels, BNP workers set fire to the police post in Karkrel, pelted stones at the Chief Justice’s residence and damaged several vehicles. Personnel of law enforcement agencies released tear gas shells and resorted to lathicharge. In the footage broadcast on TV, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel can be seen at the spot to help the police control the protesters. “BNP leaders and workers attacked government establishments and properties, legal action will be taken against them,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police Intelligence Branch chief Haroonur Rashid told reporters.
He said several policemen were injured in the attack and were admitted to the Central Police Hospital and ‘were attacked there also.’ Meanwhile, the main opposition BNP has called for a nationwide strike on Sunday against the police action in foiling its scheduled rally and their attack on its workers, the first such protest in many years. Prime Minister Hasina’s ruling Awami League party also rallied thousands of its supporters and took out a ‘peace rally’ at the south gate of Betul Mokarram Nation Mosque. Around the same time, BNAP activists were demonstrating around the party’s new platoon central office.
Both these places are in the main area of Dhaka. Anti-riot police had created a buffer zone in Purana Paltan area to prevent clashes between the workers of these two parties. These workers had sticks and stones in their hands. Both the parties had received permission last night to hold rallies at places of their choice, but several conditions were imposed on them. Violating these conditions, both sides took out rallies and blocked traffic in most parts of the capital Dhaka. Many shops and shopping complexes were closed due to fear of violence.
