Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday announced a moratorium on repayment of loans taken from primary agricultural cooperative societies in view of crop damage caused by recent rains and hailstorms. He hoped that this step would provide a big relief to the farmers in this hour of crisis. Mann said in the statement that the farmers can pay this amount after recovering from the loss.
He said that as a result of this move, a large number of farmers would be saved from becoming defaulters and would remain eligible to take loans for the next crop season. The Chief Minister said that the State Co-operative Societies lend money to farmers in the form of short-term crop loans. Earlier in the day, Mann said he had issued instructions for a special girdawari (field inspection) to assess crop damage due to the recent rains and ordered it to be completed within a week. Mann had visited rain-affected areas in Moga, Muktsar, Bathinda and Patiala districts on Sunday. Unseasonal rains coupled with hailstorm and strong winds have damaged wheat and other crops in many parts of the state.
