Quad reiterates support for expansion of UN Security Council

Talking about UN Security Council reforms, the Quad foreign ministers said we agreed that a rules-based international order is rooted in international law, including the UN Charter, and the principles of sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity .

The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) on Friday reiterated its support for the UN Charter, which includes expanding the permanent and non-permanent seats of the 15-member world body. In the meeting chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, the Quad foreign ministers comprehensively reviewed various issues ranging from Indo-Pacific to ASEAN. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Japanese Yoshimasa Hayashi and US State Department Secretary Antony Blinken participated in the meeting organized on the sidelines of Raisina Dialogue 2023 here today.

Talking about UN Security Council reforms, the Quad foreign ministers said we agreed that a rules-based international order is rooted in international law, including the UN Charter, and the principles of sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity . We commit to cooperate in consultation with our partners and through multilateral and international fora to enlighten the United Nations and the international system.

We reiterate our unwavering support for the United Nations Charter including its three pillars and our unwavering commitment to strengthen the United Nations and the international system through a comprehensive reform agenda, including expansion of the permanent and non-permanent seats of the UN Security Council Let’s repeat. In this regard, we commit to active and constructive engagement in the Inter-Governmental Negotiations (IGN) process on Security Council Reforms with the overall objective of making the UN Security Council more effective, representative and credible.
