Moscow: Russian scientists have surprised everyone by successfully growing watermelons in the most difficult places. Russian scientists have done this feat in Antarctica which is the coldest place in the world. Scientists have got this achievement at Vostok station and watermelons have been grown as part of an experiment. This feat of Russian scientists is being termed as a miracle. It has been told by Live Science that this achievement of Russian scientists is just a fantasy. Average temperatures in Antarctica range from about −10 °C on the coast to −60 °C in the interior.

Watermelon born 4300 years ago
Russia’s Vostok Station is located at the Pole of Cold. This is the place where Russian scientists do research throughout the year. This station is the coldest place on this earth. Once at Vostok station the temperature reached -89.2 degrees. Watermelons were grown in Sudan more than 4300 years ago. These are seen on Egyptian tombs at Saqqara in Sudan. In other words, watermelon was born far away from the cold place of Antarctica, so its growing in Antarctica is considered important in itself.

how did it all go
To make Vostok Station’s greenhouse more suitable for watermelons, researchers from the Russian Antarctic Expedition of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), together with colleagues from the Agrophysical Research Institute and the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences . They created a space where the temperature and humidity of the air could be increased to conditions that were just right for juicing fruit.

Arrangement of artificial sunlight
The team deliberately selected two varieties of watermelons that ripened very early. His aim was not only to test their taste, but also to test their potency after the low atmospheric pressure and lack of oxygen inside the greenhouse. He sowed the seed in a thin layer of soil and then specially arranged the light. This light looked exactly like sunlight. As there were no insects to pollinate the plants, the scientists pollinated each seed by hand, according to the AARI statement. Exactly 103 days after planting the seeds, the researchers saw eight ripe and sweet fruits. Watermelons had increased to about two pounds i.e. one kilo.
