The number of artificially bred pandas reached more than 500 in 20 years

The panda is considered a distinctive symbol of Chinese culture, which not only represents China’s unique animal culture, but also symbolizes the wisdom, friendship and peace of the Chinese nation. Pandas have been used many times as mascots for sporting events. For example, the mascot of the Beijing Asian Games in 1990 is “Fanfan”, the mascot of the 2008 Beijing Olympics is “Chingching”, the mascot of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is “Bingdundun”, and the currently held Changtu Universiade. Mascot “Rongbao”. Panda is the prototype of all of them.
Panda, which has been living on the earth for 8 million years, is the leading species of biodiversity conservation in the world. Once endangered, the panda is regarded as a “national treasure” of China. China has made continuous efforts to conserve pandas and promote their numbers and breeding. On August 5, 2003, a panda cub was born at the Panda Breeding Research Base in Changtu, becoming the first panda to survive artificial breeding in China. By May 2023, the number of wild pandas in China has increased to 1,864, and there are 548 artificially bred pandas, totaling 2,412. It took China 20 years to achieve this feat.
Happily, the threat level of pandas has been reduced from “endangered” to “vulnerable” in the year 2021. This confirms the upgrading of the living environment of wild species in China. Over the decades, China has made sustained efforts to reintroduce domesticated pandas to the wild and expand wild populations, and has established 67 natural protection areas for pandas.
