Bogota. As India steps up efforts to evacuate its citizens stranded in violence-hit Sudan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke to his UK counterpart James Cleverly and discussed the situation in the African country.

Jaishankar, who arrived in Colombia’s capital Bogota from Panama, had on Monday announced the launch of ‘Operation Kaveri’ to bring back Indians stranded in Sudan. Heavy fighting is ongoing in Sudan due to a power struggle between the regular army and the RSF. Jaishankar tweeted on Thursday, “I just spoke to UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly. The situation in Sudan was discussed.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Tuesday that his government has launched a massive evacuation effort to help British nationals leave Sudan. Sunak had tweeted, “The government has launched a massive operation to remove British passport holders from Sudan on RAF flights. Priority will be given to those most at risk, especially families with children and the elderly.

Jaishankar shared pictures of people arriving from Sudan at the Delhi airport on Twitter. He wrote, “India welcomes the return of its people. The first flight under Operation Kaveri reached Delhi and 360 Indian citizens were brought home.” He said, “More steps will be taken under Operation Kaveri. 136 more Indian nationals have reached Jeddah safely. They will come home soon.

India has so far evacuated at least 670 Indian nationals from Sudan. Jaishankar is on a nine-day visit to Guyana, Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic. This is his first visit to Latin American countries and the Caribbean region as External Affairs Minister.
