Senior Congress leader Ram Chandra Poudel elected as the new President of Nepal

Kathmandu: Senior Nepali Congress leader Ramchandra Paudel was elected as the new President of Nepal on Thursday. Mr. Paudel, 78, defeated his rival Nepali Communist Party (Emale) leader Subhash Nemwang by more than double the margin in the presidential election held today. The term of outgoing President Vidya Devi Bhandari ends on March 12.
According to the Election Commission of Nepal, out of total 52 thousand 628 votes, Poudel got 33 thousand 802 votes and Nemwang got 15 thousand 518 votes. Born in September 1944, Poudel has been in prison for a decade. Prior to this, he has been a six-time MP, five-time minister and once the speaker of the National Assembly.
In Nepal’s presidential election, 831 of the country’s total 881 MPs and Provincial Legislators took part in the voting, including 313 MPs and 518 MLAs. 14 MPs from Rashtriya Prajatantrik Party and one MP each from CPN(EML) and Nepal Mazdoor Kisan Party abstained while two MPs from Nepali Congress and Nepali Communist Party (Maoist Centre) voted due to being abroad for medical treatment. Could not put 31 members of the MLAs also abstained from voting.
