Shahbaz Sharif elected new Prime Minister of Pakistan, will take oath on Monday

Islamabad: Shahbaz Sharif, the joint candidate of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led alliance, was on Sunday elected as the 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan.
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq announced that Sharif had been elected prime minister after winning Sunday’s vote in the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament. PML-N president Sharif won the election by securing 201 votes out of the total 293 votes cast during the polling. Sharif’s only rival, Omar Ayub Khan, the joint candidate of Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and former prime minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, secured 92 votes, he said.
The Speaker said that a total of 169 votes from the 336-member National Assembly were required for victory. Sharif received votes from PML-N, MPs from Pakistan Peoples Party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan and other allies.
Earlier on Friday, members of the National Assembly elected Sadiq as the Speaker of the House and Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah as the Deputy Speaker. After the general elections held in the country on February 8, 2024, a new House has been formed and the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker have been elected.
