Singapore:Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Monday that he will step down on May 15 after leading the economically prosperous country’s government for nearly 20 years and will be succeeded by Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. Lee is handing over the reins of the country to Wong behind schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic and problems with succession plans.

Lee, 72, took the oath of office and secrecy as the third Prime Minister of Singapore on 12 August 2004. In a Facebook post, Lee said the leadership change is an important moment for any country. He said, “Last year in November, I had expressed my desire to step down from the post of Prime Minister this year.” I will end my role as Prime Minister on 15 May and DPM (Deputy Prime Minister) Lawrence Wong will be sworn in as the next Prime Minister on the same day.

“Leadership change is an important moment for any country,” Lee said. Lawrence and the 4G team (4th Generation) have worked hard to earn people’s trust, especially during the pandemic. “Through the ‘Forward Singapore Exercise’, he has engaged with many Singaporeans with the aim of refreshing our social compact and developing a national agenda for a new generation.”
