The Center for ASEAN Studies of Singapore’s renowned think tank ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute launched its Southeast Asia State Survey Report for 2024 on April 2. The survey shows that China is considered the most economically and politically influential country in Southeast Asia.
Most respondents believe that relations between Southeast Asian countries and China are getting better, and their confidence in the US as a strategic partner and ensuring regional security has declined significantly. The survey said Southeast Asian respondents are generally optimistic about the prospects for relations with China.
At the same time, more respondents believe that the US has reduced its involvement in the regional affairs of Southeast Asia. Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia have the highest number of respondents lacking confidence in the US.
According to reports, this survey was conducted between January 3 and February 23. A total of 1,994 people took part in this survey.
The respondents came from academia, think tanks, business circles, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, media, government departments, and regional and international institutions in ASEAN countries. Let us tell you that this is the sixth consecutive year that ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute has released this report. The report analyzes the perception and trust rates towards China and the US in Southeast Asia. The report also includes opinion polls on several high-profile geopolitical issues.
