At least 32 Indian fishermen were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy on Wednesday for allegedly fishing in the territorial waters off Sri Lanka’s Talaimannar coast and Delft peninsula.

This is the highest number of Indian fishermen detained in a single day this year. This information has been given in a government statement. According to the statement, the Navy apprehended seven Indian fishermen with two boats off Talaimannar and 25 Indian fishermen with three boats off Delft Peninsula.

According to the statement, seven fishermen and their two boats were brought to Talaimannar dock while 25 fishermen and their three boats were taken to Kankasanthurai port. These fishermen and their boats will be handed over to the Fisheries Inspectorates of Mannar and Malady respectively for further legal action.

The Navy has so far caught 23 Indian boats and 178 Indian fishermen in 2024 and handed them over to the authorities for legal action. The issue of fishermen is a controversial issue in the relations between India and Sri Lanka.

In several alleged incidents of illegal intrusion into Sri Lankan territorial waters, Sri Lankan naval personnel even opened fire on Indian fishermen and seized their boats in the Palk Strait.

Palk Strait is a narrow strip of water separating Sri Lanka from Tamil Nadu which is a fishing ground for fishermen of both the countries. Fishermen from both countries are often arrested when they unknowingly reach each other’s territorial waters. In the year 2023, the Sri Lankan Navy caught 240 Indian fishermen with 35 boats for allegedly fishing in its territorial waters.
