Sri Lankan Navy takes action again, arrests 21 fishermen

The Sri Lankan Navy surrounded them. The 21 fishermen arrested were on boats of Israel and Arokyaa Sugandhaan. The arrested fishermen were then taken to Kangesanthurai and then handed over to Fisheries Department officials at Mayiletti port.
Another batch of 21 Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the international maritime border. On March 16, fishermen from Tamil Nadu left the port in more than 500 boats for fishing. They were fishing in the waters between Kachatheevu and Neduntheevu when they were surrounded by the Sri Lankan Navy. The 21 fishermen arrested were on boats of Israel and Arokyaa Sugandhaan. The arrested fishermen were then taken to Kangesanthurai and then handed over to Fisheries Department officials at Mayiletti port.
On 16 March, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for remaining silent on the continued arrests of Tamil fishermen. There has been an issue of fishermen between India and Sri Lanka for a long time. The Sri Lankan Navy has also fired on Indian fishermen several times in the Palk Strait. The sea strip situated between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka is a rich area in terms of fish and fishermen from both the countries come here for fishing.
