Sri Lanka said earlier this month it would allow foreign offshore research vessels to refuel at its ports despite a year-long ban on such vessels.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene arrived in China on Monday on a six-day official visit, during which he will hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang to further strengthen bilateral relations.

Chinese state media reported that Gunawardena was welcomed by China’s Deputy Foreign Minister and former Ambassador to India Sun Weidong upon his arrival. This will be the first visit by a Sri Lankan leader to Beijing after Colombo repeatedly barred Chinese research vessels from visiting Hambantota port, reportedly due to India’s security concerns. At that time, China had reacted by expressing dissatisfaction on this step of Colombo.

However, Sri Lanka said earlier this month it would allow foreign offshore research vessels to refuel at its ports despite a year-long ban on such vessels.
