The court’s announcement comes as parliament is expected to vote for a second time on whether to confirm Pita’s name as prime minister. PITA’s Move Forward Party won the most seats in the May general election.
Bangkok. Thailand’s constitutional court on Wednesday agreed to suspend the leader of the Move Forward Party and prime ministerial candidate Pita Limjaroenrat from his duties as a lawmaker pending trial for election law violations. The verdict is not pronounced on the charges. The court’s announcement comes as parliament is expected to vote for a second time on whether to confirm Pita’s name as prime minister. PITA’s Move Forward Party won the most seats in the May general election. It entered into an alliance with eight parties. This alliance has got 312 seats in the House of Representatives.
The coalition did not get enough support from the Senate in an early vote last week. The Senate and the House of Representatives vote together to confirm the name of the new prime minister. Despite the court’s announcement, Pita is allowed to file nominations, at least until the decision, and may be elected as prime minister. The Election Commission of Thailand referred Pita’s case to the court. The commission had said that there was evidence of violation of election rules by PITA. The case against Pita relates to his alleged undisclosed ownership of shares in a media company, which is restricted to MPs.
