Thousands of Israelis gathered outside the parliament building in Jerusalem on Sunday in the largest anti-government demonstration since the war against Hamas began in October.
He urged the government to reach an agreement to free dozens of people held hostage by Hamas in Gaza and to hold elections ahead of schedule. Disagreements have arisen in Israeli society regarding the war that has been going on for almost six months.
1,200 people were killed and 250 were taken hostage in an attack by Hamas militants who crossed the border on October 7. About half of the hostages were released during a week-long ceasefire in November.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to destroy Hamas and return all hostages home. However, his goal does not seem to be being achieved. The war has suffered significant losses to Hamas, but it is far from over, while the hostages’ families feel time is running out.
“After six months, it seems the government has realized that Netanyahu is an obstacle,” protester Einav Moses said. “It seems that he really does not want to bring them (hostages) back and has failed in this mission.” Moses’ father-in-law, Geddy Moses, has been taken hostage.
