A commercial flight from Miami to Chile with 271 passengers on board made an emergency landing in Panama on Sunday night after the pilot collapsed in the bathroom. Ivan Andaur, 56, the commander of a LATAM Airlines flight to Santiago, experienced a massive heart attack at around 11 p.m.
The plane’s co-pilots made an emergency landing at Panama City’s Tocumen International Airport.
As the plane was landing, a nurse named Isadora ran to the pilot’s aid along with two of the doctors on board. Despite all efforts, he could not be saved. The pilot was pronounced dead after the plane landed in Panama City.
A passenger reported that about 40 minutes into takeoff, a co-pilot issued a request for all available doctors on board. As the condition of Andaur worsened, it was decided to evacuate the aircraft on landing considering the gravity of the situation. Passengers were accommodated in hotels in Panama City when flight operations resumed on Tuesday.
In response to the tragedy, LATAM Airlines reported following established protocols aimed at preserving life during the flight. Sadly, despite immediate medical assistance upon landing, Ivan Andaur could not be saved. LATAM Group expresses deep sorrow over the unfortunate incident and extends its condolences to the bereaved family of the pilot.
