Ukraine: People filed applications for compensation for houses destroyed by war

A register for Ukrainian citizens seeking compensation for homes destroyed as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war was launched on Tuesday and more than 100 people applied online. The minister gave this information while attending a conference on justice for Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told reporters, this is not only a sign of increasing demand, it also shows how people are waiting for justice. The Hague has launched a register, also known as RD4U, to assess the damage caused by Russia’s war against Ukraine.
This register was started by the Council of Europe last year. The more than 100 compensation applications filed on Tuesday are just the beginning. The Council of Europe estimates receiving between three and six million claims.
RD4U will also soon allow other types of compensation claims, including claims for damage to Ukraine’s critical infrastructure and buildings. No claims will be paid through this register but it is a concrete step towards an international compensation mechanism, which has not yet been established.
