United Nations. A UN peacekeeper was killed and eight other soldiers were seriously injured in an attack by rebels in the Timbuktu region of northern Mali on Friday. The United Nations reported that extremists are active in that area. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the peacekeepers, who were from Burkina Faso, and their patrol in the town of Ber were first hit by an “IED” and then light weapons fire.
The UN Security Council, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the head of the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali, Al-Gassim Vane, condemned the attack in the strongest terms. Dujarric said UN Secretary-General Guterres has urged the Malian authorities to identify the attackers and bring them to justice immediately.
