Amazon Rescue Operation: Know The Story Of Rescue Operation Of Four Children From Amazon Rainforest Survived In Plane Crash

The four indigenous children were aboard a Sasson single-engine propeller plane that crashed on the morning of May 1 due to engine failure. Apart from the pilot, two adults including the mother of the children were also on board the plane. The children were traveling with their mother from the village of Araracuara to the city of San Jose del Guaviare. The small plane disappeared from radar shortly after the disturbance was reported, and a search for survivors began.
The army felt that the children were alive.
On 16 May, two weeks after the crash, a search team found the wreckage of the aircraft in a thick part of the forest. The bodies of three adults were recovered from the plane but the children were nowhere to be found. The army realized that the children might be alive. So they intensified the search and sent 150 soldiers with sniffer dogs into the jungle to track down the group of four siblings. Dozens of volunteers from indigenous tribes also helped in this campaign.
It is very difficult to run a search operation in the jungle
The army on Friday tweeted pictures of a group of soldiers and volunteers with children wrapped in thermal blankets. In a video from the Colombian Air Force, soldiers can be seen carrying the children to a helicopter. The search operation was very difficult as visibility in the area was very low due to fog and dense forest. Along with the expedition, soldiers would also drop boxes of food into the forest, in the hope that the food would help the children survive. It is possible that the children could have survived because of this help.
Army used grandmother’s message
During the night, aircraft flying over the forest lit fires to aid search parties on the ground. Rescuers used a megaphone which had a recorded message from the children’s grandmother. In the message, Dadi was asking them to stay at the same place. There were also many rumors about the meeting of the children. On May 18, President Petro tweeted that the children had been found, but after some time he deleted his tweet. President Petro said that the children were first discovered by rescue dogs, which the soldiers had taken with them into the jungle.
Operation carried out within a radius of 4.5 km
Officials did not say how far the children were from the crash site when they were found, but teams were conducting operations within a radius of 4.5 km from where the plane went down. As the search progressed, soldiers found little clues in the woods that led them to believe the children were still alive. Troops found footprints, baby bottles, diapers and pieces of human-eaten fruit. Officials said the children are members of the Huetoto tribe and the eldest of the group knew how to survive in the jungle. Petro said, ‘The forest saved them.’
