US condemns Myanmar military government’s move to extend state of emergency

Washington, Aug 1: The US has condemned the move by the ruling military government (junta) in Myanmar to extend the state of emergency by six more months, saying that the junta has carried out wide-scale barbaric violence across the country. Myanmar’s military government has officially postponed elections due until August this year after extending the post-coup state of emergency to 2021. In a statement on state television on Monday, the army cited the violence as a reason to delay the elections and announced a six-month extension of the state of emergency from Tuesday.

“The United States is deeply concerned by Myanmar’s military government’s move to extend the state of emergency at a time when it has pushed the country toward violence and instability,” US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said on Monday. More than two and a half years after the overthrow of the democratically elected government, the military government carried out widespread brutality, carrying out hundreds of airstrikes, burning thousands of houses and displacing more than 1.6 million people. The US official said the US remains committed to working with our partners and allies to use political and economic leverage to hold the government accountable.
