US-India to work together after PM Modi’s highly successful visit: US official

Washington. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first state visit to the US was “very successful” and the Biden administration will continue to work with partners in India to deepen and strengthen this “very important” bilateral relationship. A senior American official said this. Prime Minister Modi visited the US from June 20-24 at the invitation of US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. Several key agreements were also signed during the high-profile visit to boost cooperation in key areas such as defence, space and trade.

Modi was given a grand welcome by President Biden at the White House. The two leaders had a historic summit on 22 June, following which Modi addressed the Congress (US Parliament) and a state dinner was hosted by Biden at the White House in his honour. Responding to questions at a briefing on Wednesday, US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel said, “This is not an ordinary moment of our times. It is about steps and efforts to deepen and strengthen our ties and partnership with India. And we believe that last week’s visit was very successful.”

Patel said, “Several announcements were made between the two countries, including steps to strengthen semiconductor supply chains. You also saw the President and the Prime Minister and our two countries talking about joint-production of engines as well as university research partnerships.” “So it’s not about where we go from here… We will continue to work closely with our partners in India to deepen and strengthen this important bilateral relationship,” Patel said. Responding to a question on human rights in India, Patel said that as Foreign Minister Antony Blinken has said before, human rights are always on the agenda for the United States.
