Asia’s longest-serving leader Hun Sen (70), who has led his party to steady growth over the past 38 years, has announced that he will hand over the prime ministership to his eldest son, Hun Manet, after winning the election this time.
Phone Penh. Cambodia goes to the polls on Sunday for a general election in which Prime Minister Hun Sen and his party, the Cambodian People’s Party, are likely to win again due to the effective suppression of the opposition. Asia’s longest-serving leader Hun Sen (70), who has led his party to steady growth over the past 38 years, has announced that he will hand over the prime ministership to his eldest son, Hun Manet, after winning the election this time. Hun Manet, 40, is a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point, a master’s degree from New York University and a PhD from the University of Bristol, UK. He is currently the Chief of Army Staff of Cambodia.
Despite Manet’s western education, analysts do not expect any immediate change in Cambodian government policy if he takes office. Cambodia has grown closer to China in recent years because of his father’s policies. Critics say that these elections being held in the absence of opposition are like making a mockery of democracy in the country. Astrid Noren-Nilsson, an expert on Cambodia at a Swedish university, said, “I don’t think anyone expected Hun Sen to disappear after Hun Manet became prime minister.” I think they will probably work together and I don’t think there is a big difference in their political outlook, including foreign policy.
