When America vetoed the Gaza ceasefire proposal, China got angry, called it disappointing

China has expressed disappointment and regret over the US vetoing a draft UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations Zhang Jun criticized the United States for vetoing the UNSC resolution, calling it disappointing and regrettable.

The ambassador also appealed to the United Nations to strengthen its efforts to establish peace in the region. Notably, the US on Friday vetoed a UN resolution supported by a majority of Security Council members and several other countries, demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. While 13 members voted in favor of a summary draft resolution submitted by the United Arab Emirates, Britain abstained from voting. It is deeply disappointing and regrettable that a UN Security Council draft resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza was vetoed. 100 countries, including China, co-sponsored this draft. Although the resolution was vetoed, the international community’s overwhelming view is clear.

Israel-Hamas war

The Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a flurry of rocket attacks into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing more than 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages. Israel subsequently retaliated with intense bombing and ground offensives against Gaza, resulting in the deaths of more than 18,000 people.
