New Castle: A group of seven public representatives from Delaware, the home state of US President Joe Biden, joined the Sikh community and presented Bhangra dance on the occasion of Baisakhi festival. All the public representatives came wearing traditional Punjabi attire. The group included Delaware Senate Majority Leader Brian Townsend, Senate Majority Whip Elizabeth Lockman, Senator Stephanie Hansen, Senator Laura Sturgeon, and State Representatives Paul Bombash, Shari Dorsey Walker and Sophie Phillips.
A colleague of a public representative also became a part of the group in this presentation. Townsend said the group of deputies learned the dance from Bhangra instructor Indian American Vishwas Singh Sodhi for about 30 hours over two months. He said that we practiced for 30 hours in about two months. There were eight of us. We practiced together as much as we could and we had an amazing coach like Vishwas Singh.
The costumes worn by the public representatives were stitched in India and were procured from there. “We were glad that none of us fell (while performing Bhangra),” Townsend said after the performance.
