According to the report of the Kathmandu Post, an 8-member team had prepared a joint report 5 years ago in which a blueprint was prepared on India-Nepal relations in the changing global and regional scenario. This report has now bitten the dust and the panel has also been disbanded. On Friday, there was a meeting of EPG members of Nepal in which it was said that their patience is paying off. He said that both the governments should either dissociate themselves from us or create an environment in which this report can be given.
India’s security concern, said former Nepalese Foreign Minister
Kamal Thapa, former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Nepal, said, “If the Government of India does not accept the report made by this joint panel, then the Government of Nepal should accept it.” The EPG was formed in 2016 when Thapa was the foreign minister. He said that this is a suggestion, not binding. He said that the Government of Nepal should accept it and make it public. The EPG was constituted to review the India-Nepal bilateral agreement in 1950 and suggest a new treaty.
Apart from this, suggestions were also to be made on transit, trade, water resources and border management between the two countries. It has been said in the report that earlier this report was to be given to PM Modi but India has many doubts about it. Former Foreign Minister of Nepal Pradeep Gyawali, who visited India, says, ‘We do not understand that this report has suggested that because of which India does not want to accept it. But it seems that there is concern about the security of India. He said that there is no option but to have good relations with India.
