According to the newspaper ‘Kathmandu Post’, the Nepal government had signed a loan agreement of $215.9 million with China in March 2016 at a low interest rate for the construction of the airport. Last year, former Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi handed over the Pokhara Regional International Airport to the then Prime Minister of Nepal, Sher Bahadur Deuba, during a courtesy call held at Baluwatar.

Pokhara airport plane crash killed 68 people

At least 68 people were killed when a Nepalese passenger plane carrying 72 people, including five Indians, crashed into a river valley on Sunday while landing at the airport in Pokhara. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), Yeti Airlines 9N-ANC ATR-72 aircraft took off from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu at 10:33 am. While landing at Pokhara airport, the plane crashed on the banks of Seti river between the old airport and the new airport.
