Foreign affairs experts said North Korea is facing a severe food crisis due to border restrictions imposed due to COVID-19 and alleged extensive government controls on the food supply.
North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un has called upon the people of the country to unite and increase food production. This information has been given in the news published in the government media on Tuesday amid concerns expressed by other countries about the country’s deteriorating food grain situation. Foreign affairs experts said North Korea is facing a severe food crisis due to border restrictions imposed due to COVID-19 and alleged extensive government controls on the food supply.
Experts have said however that they do not see any sign of famine or death due to the food crisis. At a meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party on Monday, Kim expressed his government’s determination to “bring about a revolutionary change in agricultural production without fail,” the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported. The report quoted Kim as saying, “As long as a strong leadership system is established throughout the party and there is a united force of all people, nothing is impossible.” KCNA, however, did not elaborate on this. It did not say whether Kim had taken any specific steps to boost grain production. Many observers say more grain production will require moves such as increased purchases of fertilizers, pesticides and farm machinery while North Korea uses its resources to advance its nuclear weapons program.
