Islamabad : In Pakistan, which is facing severe economic crisis, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a cut in expenditure. Meanwhile, the National Assembly was informed on Monday about the huge expenditure incurred on foreign visits of Pakistani cabinet members and purchase of protocol vehicles. These figures are for the first nine months of the government. It was revealed in the information that the government spent about Rs 6.40 crore on foreign trips and Rs 5.70 crore on the purchase of eight vehicles. Pakistani ministers were spending this money from the exchequer at a time when the country was headed towards poverty and many experts were warning the government of an impending crisis.

In response to a question by Gaus Bux Mahr of the Grand Democratic Alliance, the House was informed that Rs 63.71 million was spent on foreign tours of 23 cabinet members during the first nine months of the coalition government. However, this list includes only those visits which were done through the Cabinet Division. Since the GDA member had asked for information about foreign visits of cabinet members in 2022, it also included information about visits of former PTI ministers.

Data shows that foreign trips of seven members of the previous cabinet in Imran Khan’s government caused a loss of over Rs 62 lakh to the country’s exchequer. The names of many ministers are not included in the information given by the government. According to the news of Pakistani newspaper Dawn, a minister named Ahsan Iqbal was on a visit to Switzerland from 12 to 14 December but his name is missing from the list. There is no mention of Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s foreign visits either. His party PPP claims that he is paying for his trips out of his own pocket.

‘Begging but spending money on travel’

Mehr, who sought details of foreign visits, objected to the “incomplete information”, saying he had also asked the minister concerned what was the purpose of these visits, “What did Pakistan gain from these visits?” At the same time, he also questioned the rationale behind these visits at a time when the country is facing a severe economic crisis. Mahar said, ‘We don’t have money. We are begging. But see how much money was wasted on these trips. What the hell is this?’
