Saudi Arabia’s top diplomat Prince Faisal bin Farhan has said relations between his country and Israel will not normalize unless a path to a Palestinian state is found. Prince Faisal made the comments in an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS. The host asked, “Are you saying clearly that if there is no credible and irreversible path to a Palestinian state, relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel will not be normal?”
Prince Faisal replied, “This is the only way we will benefit.” Addressing a nationally televised news conference, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the idea of full Palestinian independence. Netanyahu highlighted that Israel must maintain security control over all areas west of the Jordan (river). Israel’s friend America was shocked by Netanyahu’s remarks. His comments come after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently stressed the need for Palestinian independence to ensure Israel’s real security.
Before the Israel–Hamas war began on October 7, the US was trying to broker an agreement in which Saudi Arabia would normalize relations with Israel. On the question of Saudi Arabia funding reconstruction in war-torn Gaza, Faisal highlighted his country’s reluctance to seek a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian problem until a solution is found.
