Abdullah al-Fattah, a Khartoum resident, said, “Most areas of the capital have been evacuated. All the residents of our street have left.” Residents say the fighting in Khartoum has entered its third week. He said fierce clashes are taking place in residential areas. Clashes have been going on since April 15 between the army led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan and the paramilitary force led by Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. Port Sudan has become a hub for foreign governments to evacuate their citizens by air and sea. Youssef Abdel-Rahman, a Sudanese university student, entered Egypt late Monday with his family.
Rehman said that his family first went to the Arkin crossing on the weekend. They told that there was a lot of crowd and they could not reach the customs area. He said that they then decided to go to the Ashkit crossing and from there they were able to cross into Egypt. “The situation in Arkin is very bad,” he said over the phone. Thousands of people have already fled Sudan to neighboring countries including Egypt, Chad, South Sudan, the Central African Republic and Ethiopia. At least 334,000 people have been displaced during the conflict in Sudan. “We are seeing a huge rush of people at the borders,” Paul Dillon, a spokesman for the International Organization for Migration, told a news conference in Geneva on Tuesday. He said that between 900 and 1,000 people reach the Ethiopian border every day, where ‘ ‘There is acute shortage of food, shelter, water, medical facilities.’
He said at least 20,000 people reached Chad. Chad shares borders with the Darfur city of Jenena, where clashes last week killed several people and wounded hundreds. Residents said that explosions and gunshots were heard in several parts of the capital early Tuesday. He said fierce clashes broke out around the army headquarters, the international airport and the Republican Palace in Khartoum. Sudan’s army and rival paramilitary forces said on Sunday they would extend a humanitarian truce for another 72 hours. According to the Sudanese Ministry of Health, some 530 people, including civilians and combatants, have been killed since the start of the conflict, while 4,500 others have been injured.
